Process at Domaine Artema
Our winemaking strategy is a unique blend of time honoured, old world processes combined with new world winemaking techniques.

Growing Gamay Wines
Our approach to winemaking involves long-term planning, craft and artistry. Using only sustainably farmed, premium fruit, our method allows the unique character of each wine to reveal itself in its own time as a delicious snapshot of the terroir, meant to be shared now and for years to come. Created with the wine enthusiast in mind, our wines are built to age gracefully yet remain perfectly drinkable upon release.
The Vineyard Blocks
Planted with Vitis vinifera in 1992, the vineyard located along Black Sage Road is home to Domaine Artema. A total of 14 acres are planted with Gamay Noir, 8 of which were newly planted in 2024.
A variety of clones were used, each bringing their own unique characteristics to the wines:
282 – balanced and fruity wines
284 – producing lighter bodied wines
358 – aromatic and fairly full-bodied wines
656 – fine, aromatic and complex wines
1060 – fruity, fat and tannic wines

The Terroir of the Black Sage Bench
The Black Sage Bench region is renowned for its diversity of soil and micro-climate which produces lower yields per vine, but with exceptionally rich and flavourful wine profiles. Slope, a large diurnal temperature range, sandy soil and long growing days provide the basis for the best grapes for the wine we want to make whether it’s a Gamay Cru or our Chardonnay year after year.
Harvesting grapes is a combination of science, intuition, and years of experience. We pick the grapes only when they are ready. The grapes will ultimately reflect the time of the season and their origin.
